The Historic Ice House at Lacawac Sanctuary
The first floor of this historic building features an open living space of kitchen area, dining area and living room which centers around the large stone fireplace once used as it's sole source of heat. On the second floor there are two bedrooms and 1 bathroom. All beds are twin beds but we can have up to two kings set up in one room for your arrival. The second bedroom is a single with twin bed. The bathroom features the original claw foot tub for a much needed soak after spending the day hiking the many trails and exploring nature around the cabin.
Lake Lacawac is a peaceful and serene setting fitting for bird watching, photography or just to meditate and relax. Because it's used for research and preservation no fishing or swimming is allowed in Lake Lacawac. For fishing or recreation you can use Lake Wallenpaupack from the Sanctuary's private beach which is only minutes away. Bring your Kayaks or Canoes - there's a boat launch on site.
Lacawac Sanctuary is a nature preserve, ecological field research station and public environmental education facility located in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania and was founded in 1966.
This building is named for its original function - storing ice. Ice harvesting on Lacawac in winter was a regular venture by the hired help to serve the needs of the Lodge year-round. The walls are so thick and the building so well insulated that large blocks of ice could be stored here in a bed of saw dust for up to a year - requiring no electricity or energy. The blocks were ultimately carted across the yard and hoisted by a built in crane to a loft above the walk-in ice box that served the lodge’s kitchen. The building was so cold local residents often used it to hang and store game for consumption later in the year. The windows and second interior floor were added in the 1950’s when the structure was converted to a winter cottage for use by Arthur and Isabel Watres.

Reviews
“Could not be happier about the cabin we rented at Lacawac Sanctuary. The brand-new renovation was instantly apparent, and it is stunning. The cabin had everything it needed, and it was cozy. We have no complaints whatsoever and would encourage nature-loving adults to consider this rental! Loved the ability to use a canoe on Lake Ariel, and hiking on the Big Lake Trail was spectacular.”
